Preserving South Sudanese Heritage

The story behind Asedo's Kitchen!

What started as a spontaneous live cooking session has grown into a vibrant celebration of culture, flavor, and community. We invite you to experience the rich, traditional tastes of South Sudan made accessible for every home cook.

My food blogging journey began during the COVID-19 lockdowns in May 2021, when I hosted a Facebook Live cooking session making chapatis. After the livestream, several people encouraged me to start a YouTube channel, a suggestion that birthed Asedo's Kitchen. Since then, our community has grown steadily to more than 8600 subscribers, and I am incredibly grateful for every person who has cooked, learned, and shared this journey with me.

At Asedo's Kitchen, I share the South Sudanese, Sudanese, and Kenyan dishes I grew up eating. I also create beginner-friendly fusion recipes and explore flavours from other cuisines. My goal has always been to make cooking approachable, enjoyable, and accessible for everyone, regardless of their experience in the kitchen.

This blog is the next chapter of Asedo's Kitchen. I created it in response to the many requests for written versions of my recipes. Whether you prefer to follow along with a video or read step-by-step instructions, you'll find recipes here that celebrate culture, family, and the joy of sharing good food.

At Asedo's Kitchen, we're passionate about preserving culture, building confidence in the kitchen, and making cooking accessible to everyone. Our mission is centred around three key goals.

Our Mission

1. Take the Guesswork Out of South Sudanese Cooking

South Sudanese cooking can feel intimidating, especially for beginners, because it has traditionally not been recipe-based. Most recipes have been passed down verbally from one generation to the next. Like many others, I learned by watching family members cook and mastering what I like to call the art of eyeballing ingredients.

At Asedo's Kitchen, I'm changing that by creating simple, beginner-friendly recipes with clear measurements and easy-to-follow instructions. Through both this blog and my YouTube tutorials, I aim to help home cooks recreate traditional South Sudanese and Sudanese dishes with confidence, whether they're cooking these dishes for the first time or reconnecting with flavours from home.

2. Change the Narrative Around Cooking And Gender Roles

Cooking is an essential life skill that everyone should have, regardless of gender.

Traditionally, many domestic roles in South Sudan were clearly defined, and boys were often discouraged from entering the kitchen because it was considered a woman's space. While these customs reflected a particular way of life, today's world is very different. Many young people leave home to pursue education, work, or new opportunities, only to discover they lack the basic skills and confidence to prepare their own meals.

Asedo's Kitchen encourages both young men and women to embrace cooking as a practical, empowering, and enjoyable part of everyday life. Learning to cook is about more than preparing food. It's about independence, confidence, health, and preserving culture.

3. Preserve South Sudanese Culinary Heritage

Traditional South Sudanese cuisine is rich in history, culture, and flavour, yet it remains one of the world's least documented cuisines.

Asedo's Kitchen is building a growing library of written recipes to help preserve these treasured dishes for future generations. I hope that young people born or raised outside South Sudan and Sudan, as well as anyone curious about our cuisine, will have a trusted place to discover, learn, and celebrate these recipes.

Every recipe shared here is another step towards preserving our food traditions, celebrating our cultural identity, and ensuring these dishes continue to be enjoyed for generations to come.
